M-CERSI Conference Examines Patient-Focused Drug Development

Drug researchers and regulators will join patients, caregivers and patient advocacy groups at the M-CERSI Conference on Patient-Focused Drug Development in Bethesda, Md., on March 9. The free, daylong conference at the Hyatt Regency Bethesda will provide a forum for all stakeholders on the issue to engage in an open dialogue. Media are welcome to attend.

Patient-focused drug development is a new movement aligned with one of the core goals of the Affordable Care Act – a focus on patient-centered approaches to health care design and delivery. Discussion between all stakeholders is necessary in order to define goals and develop a common framework for patient-focused drug development, and the conference serves that need, according to the event’s organizer, Eleanor Perfetto, PhD, MS, professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Health Services Research at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.

Panels and presentations at the conference will cover issues such as the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) patient-focused drug development initiative, the role of patients and how patient organizations can impact new therapy development, and how the pharmaceutical industry is preparing for a new era of increased patient involvement.

M-CERSI, the University of Maryland Center of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation, focuses on creating new tools, standards and approaches to improve the way drugs and medical devices are developed and evaluated. Funded by the FDA, it is a collaborative partnership between the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the University of Maryland, College Park and is part of the MPowering the State initiative.
