Luxembourg Institute Of Health Research Dedicated To Life

To anticipate the developments of the fast-changing research sector, CRP-Santé and the Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg (IBBL) foundation unite to form a new entity: the Luxembourg Institute of Health.

The law of 3rd December 2014 on the organisation of public research foresees the integration of the Integrated BioBank of Luxembourg (IBBL) into the new Luxembourg Institute of Health and guarantees at the same time the status of a clearly identified structure to the IBBL Institute as well as a management autonomy, allowing it to fully assume its role as service provider on a national and international level. The IBBL Institute now operates under the responsibility of the Board of Directors of the Luxembourg Institute of Health. This new organisation reflects the willingness of the Government to reinforce the research structures in Luxembourg by creating synergy of people and technology to anticipate the evolution of a fast-evolving sector.

With over 300 members, the Luxembourg Institute of Health henceforth prolongs the engagement of CRP-Santé and the IBBL foundation in the improvement of patients’ lives, diagnosis and disease treatment by implementing personalised medicine.

The Luxembourg Institute of Health is a public medical research centre. Striving for excellence, the researchers of the Luxembourg Institute of Health, through their creativity, enthusiasm and commitment, generate knowledge on disease mechanisms and contribute to the development of new diagnostics, innovative therapies and clinical applications that impact the health of Luxembourgish and European citizens. The activities of the Luxembourg Institute of Health are deployed in the areas of oncology, infectiology, immunity and population health.

At the forefront of biomedical sciences, the Luxembourg Institute of Health is deeply involved in the development of national and international research programs in the field of personalised medicine. The Luxembourg Institute of Health catalyses synergies with health sector stakeholders, hospitals and public or private biomedical organisations. Through the transfer of scientific discoveries and technological developments, it generates added value on the societal and economic level. As the first supplier of public health information in Luxembourg, it enables public authorities to make decisions based on scientific data and hence to communicate validated data to international institutions.

The Luxembourg Institute of Health hosts a large number of students, Master trainees as well as PhD candidates, in partnership with the University of Luxembourg and foreign universities. It also hosts early career scientists who specialise in certain areas of scientific research.

With a modern infrastructure, state-of-the-art technologies and a stimulating work environment guaranteeing quality training and supervision, the Luxembourg Institute of Health allows these young scientists to start their career in the best conditions.

The IBBL Institute is a biobank supporting biomedical research for the patients’ benefit. The mission of the IBBL Institute is to make biological samples and the associated high-quality data available to researchers, to promote scientific excellence and partnerships, and to support research that translates scientific discoveries into new healthcare solutions.

The IBBL Institute is an integrated research infrastructure certified according to the international quality standards ISO 9001: 2008 and NF S96-900: 2011, providing service for collection, processing, analysis and storage of biological samples and associated data. In addition, the IBBL Institute performs advanced pre-analytical research to optimise the handling of biological samples and to certify their quality.
