Loughborough University Launches Centre For Sport And Exercise Medicine Powered By Vicon
Motion capture will aid academic research and rehabilitation into sports-related injuries
Oxford, UK - 25 October 2016 – Vicon, the motion capture technology specialist for the life science, entertainment and engineering industries, today announces that Loughborough University has installed multiple Vicon systems across the newly opened National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine East Midlands (NCSEM-EM) hub on its campus. Three laboratories will feature Vicon cameras providing academics, clinicians and students with the ability to capture high quality data, which will assist their research into the treatment and rehabilitation of conditions associated with a lack of exercise and sports-related injuries.
The National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine is an Olympic legacy project, which has been designed to bring together the research, education and clinical capabilities of partner universities and NHS trusts – in order to deliver education and clinical service in sport, exercise and physical activity. The University has installed Vicon cameras and Nexus precision data capture and processing software across its Functional Analysis Rehabilitation Lab, Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN) lab as well as the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport.
The Functional Analysis Rehabilitation Lab boasts a 12 camera system which will support clinical services as well as analysing human motion. The Vicon system will be used for various research projects due to its ability to provide consistent results and to-the-point accuracy. Current projects include examining the factors which cause injury to cricketers and stress fractures to fast bowlers, the research is being conducted in partnership with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and will form the basis of guidelines on bowling to minimise injury risk.
Vicon technology also features in other areas of the NCSEM-EM such as the Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN) lab. Here 12 cameras will be utilised by a range of academics within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. Providing precision tracking and fast data processing to support the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with a variety of conditions – from back pain to posture and balance difficulties.
Vicon systems can be found elsewhere on campus and the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport utilises a 10 camera system to track the upper body kinematics of Paralympic athletes. The system is primarily being used to maximise athletes’ performance in handcycling, by studying the effect different handbike configurations can have on technique and performance. It is also used to help minimise the risk of injury to wheelchair users by understanding more about the forces being placed on a specific joint during propulsion.
