Los Alamos National Laboratory Spin-out, CIVA Gets New CEO

LOS ALAMOS, N.M.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) spin-out CIVA (the Company for Information Visualization and Analysis http://www.civaglobal.com), exclusively tasked with making the innovative new EpiCast flu and pandemic computer modeling tool available to government and corporate entities worldwide, has named John R. Grizz Deal its president and chief executive officer.

Perhaps the most far-reaching public health tool ever to come from behind the doors of the U.S. government's famously remote national center of scientific research, EpiCast is the basis for U.S. federal government mitigation and response planning for the Department of Homeland Security and the White House. Created by LANL's Dr. Tim Germann, the program simulates in detail, the spread of "Avian Flu" and other natural or manmade (terrorist) airborne pathogens. One of its unique features is EpiCast's ability to provide custom mitigation strategies to offset the pathogen's predicted impact on the studied community - whether that community is a private company, small city or entire nation.

Named as one of Fast Company Magazine's "Fast 50" companies in 2007, CIVA is headquartered in New Mexico. According to L. Robert Libutti, Ph.D., chairman of the board of CIVA, the company was formed in 2005 to bring sophisticated but often hard to use, business analytics and information visualization tools into the day-to-day lives of business decision-makers.

Deal has over 20 years of experience in startups, fast growing ventures, and acquisitions. He is managing director at Purple Mountain Ventures, serving large and small international firms on product development, capital expansion, and marketing. In addition to working with CIVA, Deal is currently serving as Entrepreneur in Residence for the NNSA at Technology Ventures Corporation as well as an advisor to Altira Group, the premier North American fund focused on energy-related ventures.

Deal was previously Visiting Entrepreneur at LANL. He has raised over $100 million for early stage firms, is the former chief marketing officer for Space Imaging, and also the founder and former CEO of LizardTech, one of the more successful LANL spin-outs. Deal holds graduate and undergraduate degrees from Texas A&M University.
