VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., June 14, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- LifeNet Health's internationally recognized Skin and Wound Allograft Institute (SWAI) announces a new decellularized, regenerative human dermal matrix processed with a patented technology that safely renders allograft dermal tissue acellular without compromising its biomechanical properties.

According to LifeNet Health Product Manager Julie Gustafson, DERMACELL® uses patented LifeNet Health MATRACELL® technology to create a safe and effective acellular bio-implant solution for today's leading plastic and reconstructive surgeons.

"Matracell® is a patented and validated process that removes donor cells and greater than 97% of donor genetic material," said Gustafson.

The result is an acellular tissue which maintains its desired biomechanical and biochemical properties for its intended surgical application.

"With Dermacell, the collagen, elastin and native growth factors which have been associated with healing are retained, making it ideal for use in reconstructive surgery, including breast and facial reconstruction," said Bud Brame, Vice President of Tissue Service for LifeNet Health.

According to Brame, other product benefits include pull-out strength and load to failure which are comparable to existing allograft products.

As for safety and ease of handling, Dermacell has a 10-6 Sterility Assurance Level (SAL) and can be stored in a fully hydrated state at room temperatures of 15-30 degrees Celsius. LifeNet Health patented Preservon® process acts as a humicant to maintain the moisture within the allograft while providing a bacteriostatic environment. A 30-second rinse prior to implantation is the only preparation requireda significant advantage over conventional allograft alternatives.

"Dermacell Advanced Decellularized Dermis is the only allograft product of its kind on the market today," said LifeNet Health President and CEO Rony Thomas. "It's another solution made possible through research, technology and LifeNet Health and SWAI's ongoing commitment to leadership in the field of regenerative medicine."
