Lake Region Medical Wins Medical Technology Company of the Year Award

Monday 17th December 2012. Lake Region Medical Ltd has won the Irish Medical Technology Company of the Year 2012 Award and TECHNOPATH MANUFACTURING secured the Emerging Medical Technology Company of the Year Award at the sixth annual Medical Technology Industry Excellence Awards, which took place last Thursday in Galway’s Radisson Blu Hotel. The Awards are jointly hosted by Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland and the Irish Medical Devices Association, a business sector within IBEC.

Lake Region Medical Limited is an Original Development Manufacturer of minimally invasive devices and components with clinically-focused product innovations. It is an industry expert in developing and marketing medical devices to meet unique clinical challenges for stimulation therapy, cardiovascular, neurovascular, and peripheral vascular applications. TECHNOPATH MANUFACTURING is a privately held company that manufacture products for a number of multinational in-vitro diagnostic companies. Its products monitor the quality of Hospital Laboratory Blood Tests and prevent the reporting of incorrect results thus ensuring optimal patient care.

Commenting on the awards Andrew Vogelaar, Head of IDA’s Medtech Division said, ‘Lake Region first established operations in Wexford in 1994 and today employs 800 people between their high volume manufacturing site in Wexford and their international research and development centre in Galway. It is a tribute to the management and staff at Lake Region that the company’s operations in Ireland have achieved global responsibility for design and manufacturing of several product lines.

Ireland’s reputation as a hub for the medical technology sector continues to go from strength to strength due to the combined forces of our indigenous and multinational Medtech cluster. 17 of the top 25 global Medtech companies are located in Ireland with the sector responsible for over €7.3 billion in exports annually.’

Commenting on winning the Company of the Year Award John Harris, Vice President of Operations at Lake Region Medical said, “Being crowned MedTech Company of the year is an acknowledgment of Lake Region Medical’s place among the top medical device companies in the world. It is also a tribute to the hard work, dedication and commitment of all our employees who have made this possible.”

This industry recognition follows on from the recent achievement of Shingo accreditation by Lake Region Medical Limited demonstrating to their customers the company’s determination to reach the highest standards of operational excellence and to embed the continuous improvement philosophy deep into its culture. As the only European medical device manufacturer to hold Shingo accreditation Lake Region Medical has been independently validated against a world recognized standard and labelled a centre of excellence.

Emerging Company of the Year Award winner Malcolm Bell, CEO of TECHNOPATH MANUFACTURING said, "Winning the Irish Medical Device Association Emerging Company of the year is a tremendous recognition of Technopath’s collective effort over the past seven years to become a leading player in the global production of quality control material. During 2012, Medtech investment in Ireland has included investments from Cook Medical, Merit Medical, TECHNOPATH MANUFACTURING, Stryker Ireland, Arc Royal, Nypro Healthcare, Pro-Tek, Res Med, Bellurgan, Delcath Systems, Inc. and Diaceutics Dundalk.

The prestigious Medical Technology Outstanding Contribution Award was given to John O'Shaughnessy. John is one of the original trailblazers for medical device sector in Ireland with thirty years experience across a number of disciplines including top level general management, senior operations and commercial management. Mr O'Shaughnessy is currently Chairman of Neuravi, a company developing a medical device to help stroke doctors treat patients very quickly after stroke onset by removing the lodged blood clot from the brain with its proprietary Stent Basket technology. John is also Chairman of Vistamed Limited, Cambus Teoranta and Almotech Limited. He was a founding director of MedNova Limited, a company which pioneered the development of embolic protection and carotid stent medical devices from concept stage to final FDA PMA approval, which was subsequently acquired by Abbott Laboratories, John also previously was Chairman of Crospon and President and Managing Director of C.R. Bard Ireland.

Also on the night, DePuy Ireland received the Silver Medical Technology Company of the Year Award, while Stryker Ireland and Hollister were highly commended while neoSurgical received the Silver Emerging Medical Technology Company of the Year Award, while i360 and APICA Cardiovascular were highly commended.
