Kiyotaka Fujii Appointed President And Chief Executive Officer Of Quintiles Japan

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Quintiles Transnational Corp. today announced the appointment of Kiyotaka Fujii as President and Chief Executive Officer of Quintiles Transnational Japan K.K. (Quintiles Japan) as of August 1, 2005.

An executive with more than 20 years of international business experience, Fujii will lead all operations of Quintiles Japan. With approximately 1,800 employees, Quintiles Japan is the largest provider of development, commercial and financial solutions to pharma and biotech companies operating in Japan, the world's second-largest pharmaceutical market.

Prior to joining Quintiles, Fujii was President and CEO of SAP Japan Co., Ltd. SAP is the world's largest enterprise software company. Under Fujii's leadership since 2000, SAP Japan has grown its business threefold, with now over 50% market share.

Fujii, 48, will report to Quintiles Transnational Chairman and CEO Dennis Gillings, CBE, and will become a member of the Quintiles Transnational Executive Committee. He succeeds Derek Winstanly, M.D., who has taken a new role within Quintiles Transnational as Executive Vice President, Strategic Customer Relationships and Business Partnerships. Winstanly will continue to report to Gillings and remains on the Quintiles Japan Board.

"Over the past six years Dr. Winstanly has led Quintiles Japan's most vigorous periods of growth and expansion," Gillings said. "He now will use his talent and expertise at a global level in helping pharma companies use Quintiles' capabilities to solve major challenges, such as pricing pressures, slow product development and realizing greater value from marketing expenditures.

"We are very fortunate to have Kiyotaka Fujii succeed Dr. Winstanly as head of Quintiles Japan. Throughout his career, Fujii has demonstrated strong leadership and the ability to think strategically while delivering operational excellence and financial growth.

"Quintiles Japan is well positioned for another period of rapid growth. We have an unmatched array of services in product development and commercialization. I believe Fujii's organizational and leadership abilities will help raise Quintiles Japan to even greater levels of future success."

Prior to SAP, Fujii was president of Cadence Design Systems, Japan, from 1997 to 2000. Cadence is the world's leading supplier of electronic design automation software and services. Fujii successfully led Cadence's diversification from product-centric businesses to the services area. Fujii also has an extensive and unique background in investment banking and management consulting.

After graduating in 1980 with a law degree from the University of Tokyo, Fujii began his international business career with the consulting firm McKinsey & Company as the first hire from a Japanese college when consulting was little known in Japan.

Then, Fujii earned his MBA from Harvard University in 1986 and joined CS First Boston's M&A group in New York as one of the first Japanese M&A investment bankers on Wall Street where he worked on many takeover defense, LBO and recapitalization transactions. From 1990 to 1993, he was director of M&A Group at CS First Boston based in Tokyo where he led many Japanese companies' acquisitions overseas. In 1993, Fujji rejoined the management consulting industry as a partner with Booz, Allen & Hamilton in charge of strategy development practice for multinational companies in Japan.
