PHOENIX, Aug. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- "The Race is On!" for the 22ndSusan G. Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure® on Sunday, October 12, 2014 as it moves to its new location at Cesar Chavez Plaza in downtown Phoenix.

Komen CAN AZ 22nd Annual Phoenix Race For The Cure

As the signature fundraising and awareness event for Susan G. Komen® Central and Northern Arizona (Komen CAN AZ), the Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure provides supporters of all ages an opportunity to combat breast cancer by running, walking, fundraising and even sleeping in.

"Moving the Race to Cesar Chavez Plaza in Downtown Phoenix felt like a perfect fit," said Komen® CAN AZ Executive Director Heather Roberts. "It really accommodates attendees in the valley with its central location, especially with parking availability, light-rail access and the stores and sights in downtown Phoenix."

This year's Race carries options for any type of participant, including a one mile run/walk, a Breast Cancer Survivors' 5k run, a 5k run, a 5k walk or Sleep In for the Cure®. Komen CAN AZ also welcomes back the return of competitive timing.

"This year's theme, The Race is On, really echoes the importance each dollar continues to make in our community," said Roberts. "Proceeds aid the uninsured and underinsured women and men throughout central and northern Arizona. Any loss in participation or funds raised will reduce the amount of funds available for life-saving breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs."

With 100 percent of donations committed to the Komen promise, 75 percent of all funds raised stay in Komen CAN AZ's service area while 25 percent supports international research into the causes and cures for breast cancer. To date, Komen CAN AZ has granted more than $19.5 million to support local lifesaving breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs and $5.9 million to international research efforts and from the last cycle granted out $855,785 in community grants and more than $400,000 for research.

Sponsor support continues to serve as the key to Komen CAN AZ's fundraising efforts. Komen CAN AZ welcomes back Fry's Food Stores for the 2014 Race and celebrates its 10th anniversary as a VIP Partner.

Additional corporate sponsors include Local Presenting Sponsor Mayo Clinic, Official Race Program Sponsor Banner MD Anderson, Survivor Area Sponsor Cancer Treatment Centers of America and Sleep In for the Cure® sponsor The RoomStore.

Media sponsors for the race include Presenting Media Partners, 12 News, KNIX, KEZ, and Mix 96.9.
