Joint Polish Investment Fund Invests In HealthUp, Developer Of Myspiroo, The World’s Smallest Personal, Handheld, Digitally Connected Medical Spirometer

MySpiroo connectivity set to transform the management of COPD and asthma patients

Warsaw, Poland – June, 29th 2016 – HealthUp, a privately held company developing MySpiroo, the world’s smallest handheld, digitally connected, smart spirometer announces the closing of a $1.1 million [PLN 4.3m] seed funding. MySpiroo is being developed by HealthUp to transform the everyday disease management of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. HealthUp will use the funds to expand its team and advance the development of its fully functional prototype MySpiroo device to deliver a number of important regulatory as well as clinical milestones.

The seed funding round was led by the Joint Polish Investment Fund (JPI Fund), a new life science venture capital fund co-financed by the Polish National Centre for Research and Development under the BRIdge VC program. In conjunction with the seed fund raising, Dr. Axel Polack, General Partner at JPI Fund and a highly experienced international life science investor, was appointed as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of HealthUp.

MySpiroo is a small personal, handheld and connected device that has been designed for patients and physicians to provide on-going measurement of respiratory function, which is key to improving the overall disease management of COPD and asthma.

MySpiroo aims to deliver multiple benefits to patients by combining an accurate spirometer with additional functionalities that automatically adjust measurement parameters to reflect the prevailing environmental conditions. In addition, MySpiroo integrates the assessment of basic cardiovascular parameters that help to identify concomitant heart disease before any symptoms appear. This allows potential cardiovascular problems to be detected much earlier, before the onset of symptoms, allowing physicians to deliver greatly improved clinical outcomes.

HealthUp is at the forefront of the digital health revolution with MySpiroo as it allows all of a patient’s respiratory and cardiovascular measurements to be tracked and analysed much more frequently on a platform that they and their physicians can easily and safely access.

Dr. Lukasz Koltowski, HealthUp CEO, said: “We are delighted to have received this financial support from JPI Fund. JPI Fund’s knowledge and experience make them trusted advisors as we work to make MySpiroo, the world’s smallest medical spirometer, an essential disease management tool for COPD and asthma patients. We are confident that with MySpiroo’s digital connectivity, we can provide much greater support to patients. MySpiroo capabilities make fast data exchange between the patient and their physician much easier thereby facilitating better disease monitoring and management.”

Dr. Axel Polack, General Partner of JPI Fund, said: “Today, “m-health” is one of the fastest growing market segments in the healthcare industry. Breakthrough innovations in this field, such as MySpiroo often originate from an intelligent combination of already existing sensor technologies with clever IT solutions allowing patients and doctors to improve chronic disease management and overall health outcomes. We have great confidence that the HealthUp team has the ability to make sure that MySpiroo can become an indispensable personal device that will play a crucial role in improving the lives of patients with COPD and asthma.”

Leszek Grabarczyk, Deputy Director of the National Centre for Research and Development said: “We are satisfied being a supporter of the seed financing for HealthUp. We believe that MySpiroo is well positioned to benefit from the growing interest in “m-health” as a key way to improve disease management and to lower healthcare costs. We are looking forward to supporting the HealthUp team as they work to bring this innovative product to market. ”

HealthUp’s co-founder and CEO, Dr. Lukasz Koltowski, has recently been named as one of 2016’s Innovators Under 35 Poland by the MIT Technology Review for MySpiroo. The award showcases the most talented young innovators in Poland who are making major breakthroughs in their respective fields.
