By Tim Simmers, BUSINESS WRITER--Biotechnology company Scios Inc. will close its Fremont facility as part of a layoff and cutback in research by its parent company, Johnson & Johnson, which announced the moves Thursday.
Johnson & Johnson is laying off 500 workers from Scios and another subsidiary, Alza Corp. of Mountain View, and will move the remaining Scios workers to Mountain View. The two companies will co-exist on the Mountain View campus, which Johnson & Johnson owns. Scios has leased the Fremont facility on Paseo Padre Parkway, where it employed 700 workers. The Scios campus will be closed over the next four to five months, and some of the laid-off Scios workers will be able to apply for other jobs in Mountain View or La Jolla, where there is another Alza facility, according to Ernie Knewitz, a spokesman for Alza.
