Even as Johnson & Johnson labors to crawl out from under a mountain of product recalls, the health care giant continues to yank medicines and devices on a regular basis. The latest example involves the Cilest birth control pill in which more than 32 million boxes have been withdrawn in 43 countries because the active ingredient dissolves too slowly and decreases the contraceptive effect. “The risk to women is considered to be very low as there is no impact on the safety or efficacy of the product,” a J&J spokeswoman writes us, adding that the recall is a voluntary prevent measure, which is taking place at the wholesale and pharmacy level, does not include the US. Specifically, 179 batches are being recalled and each batch contains 180,000 boxes on the consumer level.
