EAST LANSING, Mich., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- John M. MacKeigan, MD, a Grand Rapids colon and rectal surgeon, was installed as president of the 14,500- member Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) during the 139th annual meeting of the MSMS House of Delegates on May 1 in Dearborn.
During his term as MSMS president, Doctor MacKeigan will stress the need for access to health care for all Michigan citizens.
"We must address the issue of access to health care," Doctor MacKeigan said during his inaugural speech. "Improving access is the right thing to do for our society because it affects everyone. A failure of access is a failure of our society."
Prior to his presidency of MSMS, Doctor MacKeigan served for three years as chair of the 40-member MSMS Board of Directors, which meets at MSMS headquarters in East Lansing.
Doctor MacKeigan was educated in Halifax, Nova Scotia, graduating from medical school and completing a general surgery residency at Dalhousie University Medical School in 1973. The following year, he did a colon and rectal surgery residency in Grand Rapids where he has practiced ever since.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Doctor MacKeigan practices colon and rectal surgery with Michigan Medical P.C. and the Ferguson Clinic in Grand Rapids.
As a founding member of Hospice of West Michigan, Doctor MacKeigan served as president for two years. He has been a member of the board of Care Choices of West Michigan, Grand Rapids Physician Organization, Mercy Alternative, Kent County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, the Physician Advisory Board of ACS of Michigan and Michigan Medical, P.C. He was chief of staff at Ferguson Hospital and served on a number of committees and the board of directors. He is a past president of the Michigan Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and a past president of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
Doctor MacKeigan has authored more than 40 scientific papers, edited several textbooks and written a number of book chapters. He teaches medical students and participates in a general surgery and colon and rectal residency program and participates in several research projects. He serves as a reviewer for several specialty surgical journals. Since 1994, he has been nominated as one of the "Best Physicians in America," one of the "Top Doctors in America," and recognized by Ladies Home Journal and Grand Rapids Magazine. For the past 35 years he has been married to Suzanne (LeBrun) MacKeigan. They have three children, Sara, Daniel and Jeffrey and five grandchildren.
Michigan State Medical Society is the statewide professional association of 14,500 medical doctors affiliated with the American Medical Association.
