Intestinal Immune Cell Network Discovered

A newly identified network of gastrointestinal immune cells in mammals could help scientists better understand how the immune system recognizes and responds to dangerous bacteria and viruses. That, in turn, could lead to new vaccines and treatments for gastrointestinal diseases, a new study claims. The discovery was made by a research group based at the Center for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital; a report on the finding appears in the Jan. 14 issue of Science.
