November 28, 2012 -- 1. Singapore, 27 November 2012- The International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) will hold its first Singapore press conference today in recognition of the increasing importance of Singapore in the global landscape of integrated circuit and semiconductor chip research and development. In ISSCC 2013, Singapore will present 5 papers from the A*STAR Institute of Microelectronics (IME), MediaTek Singapore, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and National University of Singapore (NUS), which is an unprecedented contribution from Singapore. In the past, not more than two papers from Singapore were presented in a year.

2. Nicknamed the “integrated circuit Olympics,” the ISSCC is the foremost global forum for presenting the advances in solid-state circuits and systems-on-a-chip. Into its 60th year, ISSCC 2013 will provide a special opportunity for looking “back to the future”, toward further exciting developments in solid-state circuits and systems with the theme of “60 YEARS OF (EM)POWERING THE FUTURE”.

3. With the increasing need for miniaturization, multi-functionality and energy efficiency in electronics devices, designing ICs has become ever more complex. Singapore is committed to nurturing skilled IC design talent to continually push the frontiers of cutting-edge technologies and has developed strong capabilities in analog, mixed-signal and RF IC design. This success is built on a vital research community including industry, research institutes, and academia working together to innovate.

4. “I am pleased that the quality of our IC design research has improved significantly, as shown by this year?s record haul of prestigious ISSCC papers. The research findings will improve our ability to monitor brain activity and reduce energy consumption in wireless and energy harvesting applications,” said Terence Gan, Deputy Director (Electronics) at the Singapore Economic Development Board. “I hope that seeing how these local inventions can improve our lives will inspire more students to do IC design.”

As a result, at ISSCC 2013 in San Francisco (February 17-21), 5 high-quality papers from Singapore will be presented as follows:

“A 110pJ/b Multi-Channel FSK/GMSK/QPSK/ /4-DQPSK Transmitter with Phase- Interpolated Dual-Injection DLL-based Synthesizer employing Hybrid FIR,” Institute of Microelectronics, A*STAR; Nanyang Technological University; National University of Singapore

“A 0.45V 100-Channel Neural Recording IC with Sub- W/Channel Consumption in 0.18 m CMOS,” Nanyang Technological University; Institute of Microelectronics, A*STAR; National University of Singapore

“A Universal GNSS (GPS/Galileo/Glonass/Beidou) SoC With a 0.25mm2 Inductor-less Radio in 40nm CMOS,” MediaTek, Singapore; MediaTek, Hsinchu, Taiwan

“A 400nW Single-Inductor Dual-Input-Tri-Output DC-DC Buck-Boost Converter with Maximum Power Point Tracking for Indoor Photovoltaic Energy Harvesting,” Nanyang Technological University

“A 57.9-to-68.3GHz 24.6mW Frequency Synthesizer with In-Phase Injection-Coupled QVCO in 65nm CMOS,” Nanyang Technological University

4. “ISSCC 2013 will be celebrating its 60th anniversary. ISSCC has been holding Far East Press Conferences in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China to encourage further participation to ISSCC. It is our pleasure to extend this Press Conference to Singapore this year, after the significant increase of importance of Singapore in this field,” said Prof. Makoto Ikeda, ISSCC Far East Regional Chair. “We are also pleased to announce that the Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference (A-SSCC) 2013 will be held in Singapore. This will be the first time for A-SSCC to be held outside of the 4 founding countries, Taiwan, China, Korea and Japan. This is another recognition of the significant contributions made by Singapore to Solid-State Circuits Society.”

5. “The first ISSCC Press Conference in Singapore is really a memorable event for Singapore IC design community. The IC design community in Singapore is small when compared to other countries, however the R&D activities in Singapore has been very active and intense in the recent years. This year, by getting 5 papers accepted for the presentation at ISSCC 2013, Singapore has become the 4th contributor in Asia following Japan, Korea and Taiwan, and 8th contributor in the world. We are very happy and grateful for the recognition given to Singapore when the ISSCC decided to have its press conference in Singapore for the first time,” said Dr. Khen-Sang Tan, IEEE Solid- State Circuits Society Singapore Chapter Former Chair.

Research, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University), Prof. Freddy Boey (Provost, Nanyang Technological University), Dr. Tan Khen Sang (Senior Advisor, Mediatek Singapore), Mr. Teo Ser Luck (Minister of State for Trade and Industry), Prof. Makoto Ikeda (Far East Regional Chair, ISSCC International Technical Programme Committee University of Japan, Tokyo), Prof. Arimoto Kazutami (Far East Regional Vice Chair, ISSCC International Technical Programme Committee, Okayama Prefectural University, Japan), Mr. Ulf Schneider (President, Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association), Dr. Lee Jae-Youl (Far East Regional Secretary, ISSCC International Technical Programme Committee, Samsung Electronics, Korea), Dr. Je Minkyu, (ISSCC International Technical Programme Committee, Senior Scientist, Institute of Microelectronics), Prof Chua Kee Chaing (Head, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore), Prof. Xu Yong Ping (IEEE SSCS Singapore Chapter Committee, Associate Professor, National University of Singapore) About International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) is the foremost forum for presentation of advances in solid-state circuits and systems-on-a-chip. The Conference offers a unique opportunity for engineers working at the cutting edge of circuit design to learn of the latest advances, and to network with leading experts. It is referred to as the „Chip Olympics?, because this is where major organizations in the chip industry and academia unveil their record-breaking designs. Among submissions from all over the world, only about 200 top papers are selected for presentation and about 3,000 people from industry and academia attend the conference. The most important milestones in the integrated circuit and semiconductor history have been first presented at ISSCC for the last 60 years – e.g. TTL (transistor-transistor logic) circuit (1962), integrated analog amplifier circuit (1968), 1kb DRAM (1970), CMOS electronic wristwatch (1971), 8-bit microprocessor (1974), 32-bit microprocessor (1981), 1Mb DRAM (1984), 1Gb DRAM (1995), Integrated GSM transceiver (1995), 1GHz microprocessor (2002), Multi-core microprocessor (2005), and so on. The ISSCC will celebrate its 60th anniversary of ISSCC at the ISSCC 2013 (February 17-21, 2013, San Francisco, CA, USA) under the conference theme of „60 Years of (Em)Powering the Future?.
