Infect-ERA Allocates € 9 Million to European Transnational Research Projects in Infectious Diseases

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Infect-ERA, a European initiative funded under the ERA-NET scheme of the European Commission, announced the projects that will be funded as a part of its first Joint Transnational Call (JTC) for collaborative research projects. Eight projects, involving 41 partners from 11 countries will be funded with about € 9.2 Million provided by funding agencies, partners in Infect-ERA. The research projects were chosen out of 96 applications involving 465 applicant groups from 11 EU member- and associated states/regions.

The first JTC for proposals of Infect-ERA was launched in February 2013 to promote transnational and interdisciplinary research in the field of infectious diseases. It focused on factors related to environment, metabolism and molecular mechanisms of infectious agents, strategies of pathogenicity, host-microbe interaction, and co-infection.

The applications received were reviewed by external referees and then by an international peer review panel. In both stages, the projects were evaluated judging their scientific and technical innovation and their clinical and commercial merit. The 8 funded projects cover a diverse range of research areas such as virulence, metabolism, ecology, co-infection, host factors and antiviral and antifungal treatment targets.

Dr. Serawit Bruck-Landais, the Coordinator of Infect-ERA said, “The number of applications and the high scientific quality of the projects are strong indicators of success for Infect-ERA. The challenges of Infectious Diseases have no borders and we make a continuous effort to expand the Infect-ERA consortium. The Indian department of Biotechnology as well as the FWO and FRNS from Belgium will participate in the second joint call scheduled to be launched early in 2014.”

About Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Europe. Various factors such emerging infectious diseases, mass migration, global travelers, misuse of antibiotics and co-infection, lead to a need for continuous global effort and novel avenues of research to fight against these expending threats.

About Infect-ERA

Infect-ERA, a consortium funded under the Seventh Framework programme (FP7), is a continuation of the former ERA-NET PathoGenoMics. To date, it includes 14 partners from 11 countries and aims at coordinating research on infectious diseases, in support of high quality, cutting edge scientific research involving all aspects of human infection caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa. Four Joint Transnational Calls are planned during the lifespan of Infect-ERA (2013-2016). Additional information is available at http://www.infect-era.eu/.
