Human Genome Sciences CEO Plans New Effort In South Florida

A renowned cancer and AIDS researcher is planning ventures in South Florida and has made a donation to The Scripps Research Institute planned in Florida. William A. Haseltine, chief executive of Human Genome Sciences in Rockville, Md., said in an interview on Wednesday that he plans to start businesses in South Florida. He declined to reveal the size of the donation from the William A. Haseltine Foundation for Medical Sciences and Arts, but said of Scripps' leaders, "they're very happy." Haseltime, who in October turns over the CEO post at the company he founded, said he is talking with Scripps president Richard Lerner about working on research and academic partnerships with the institute, as well as starting new companies. "I believe activities in Palm Beach will provide a very fertile ground," he said. Haseltine, who has founded seven biotech companies, said he is interested in focusing on regenerative medicine, restoring any part of the body that's diseased or injured to normal body functions.
