How The Sleep Industry Is Making Billions From Your Lack Of Shuteye

Chances are you aren’t sleeping as well as you’d like, and in this regard you’re just like most of us. Less than 50% of Americans say they regularly get a solid night’s sleep (the worst sleep stat in the industrialized world). That’s bad news for just about everybody except for the sleep industry, which is being fueled by our collective insomnia into the multi-billions.

According to a new report from industry researchers at IBISWorld, sleep labs—where people go to have sleep disorders diagnosed—have enjoyed 4% growth every year for the last five years and are expected to continue at that rate for the next five. In 2010 there were 2,280 sleep labs in the U.S. generating around $5.9 billion. This year, 2,800 labs are set to haul in an estimated $7.1. billion. By 2020 the industry will be within eyeshot of the $10 billion mark.
