The PAW Team was recognized for its commitment to provide veterinary care to the pets of people living in Portland, Oregon who are homeless or living in acute poverty. Through appointment-based and walk-in clinics, the PAW Team provides a range of veterinary treatment, including surgeries and spay/neuter services. The team's model also allows for the accommodation of people for whom large clinics present challengesdue to a mental health disorder, for exampleand consequently have never sought veterinary care for their pets. The PAW Team also works closely with social service agencies and other organizations that work with the homeless population to identify and secure treatment for animals that may be in need of veterinary care.

"The principle of 'doing well by doing good' has guided our Company since its founding in 1932," said Mr. Bergman. "We created the Henry Schein Cares Medal to honor organizations who share our commitment to expanding access to care for people and companion animals who are truly in need. We are pleased to award the inaugural Henry Schein Cares Medal for animal health to the Portland Animal Welfare Team in recognition of their unwavering commitment to provide quality veterinary care to Portland's most vulnerable companion animals."

Henry Schein works to serve society through the Henry Schein Cares global corporate social responsibility program. The Company uses its resources to support health care professionals around the world who provide care for those who would otherwise have little or no access to it. The Henry Schein Cares Medal honors organizations whose work has been especially effective in bringing care to those in need.

"We are honored to receive this award, and grateful that Henry Schein 'walks the talk' of corporate responsibility and giving back to the community," said Cindy Scheel, Executive Director, Portland Animal Welfare Team. "We help those who have the very least, who in many cases have lost everythingeverything but the love of their pet. Their pets ground them, give them a reason to carry on when life is at its most difficult and most importantly, gives them hope. This award will help us help them, enabling us to continue to provide excellent care for these animals so that they can live long, healthy and happy livestogether with their human families."

The PAW Team was selected by an independent panel of judges from a field of three finalists, which also included the Humane Society for Seattle-King County, of Bellevue, Washington, and Helping Paws, of Escondido, California. As the winner, the PAW Team will receive $15,000 in cash from the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, Inc. to support its work. In addition, each finalist will receive $10,000 worth of product from Henry Schein, Inc. A short video about the PAW Team's work can be found here.
