Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA) Boston Chapter Hosts Dr. Susan Love, Renowned Breast Surgeon and Author, Along With Comedienne Noreen Labatt
October 21, 2013, Boston, MA – The Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA) Boston will host an evening event with well-known breast book author and patient advocate, Dr. Susan Love, and comedienne and breast cancer survivor, Noreen Labatt, on Tuesday, October 29, 5:30-9:30 PM at Sanofi Genzyme Center in Cambridge, MA. With October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, HBA Boston will use the platform of these two women’s experiences to show examples of physician and patient needs within our medical system.
Dr. Love, a surgeon, author of best-seller Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book (Da Capo Press, 2010) and patient champion via the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, focuses on breast cancer research, prevention and patient advocacy. But after decades of tireless work on behalf of her patients, Dr. Love gained new focus for her cause when she discovered she had a diagnosis of acute myelogenous leukemia. Dr. Love has chided the medical establishment for ignoring the needs of patients: “The only difference between a researcher and a patient is a diagnosis. We’re all patients.”
In an interview with the New York Times, Dr. Love said: “There is a sense of shock when it happens to you… Even when you’re a physician, when you get shocking news like this you sort of forget everything you know and are scared the same as everybody else.”
“When cancer got the girls, the girls got even,” says Noreen Labatt. Labatt has turned her near-death BRCA2 breast cancer experience into a life-affirming comedy act that will have cancer survivors (and their doctors) rolling in her laughing gas. Diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma after her very first mammogram at age 40, Labatt’s Thanks for the Mamories, is a brilliantly humorous, one-woman act that pokes good-natured fun at her medical team and herself while sharing personal insights into her cancer journey as she endured a bi-lateral mastectomy, reconstruction, and treatment.
Labatt discusses why chemotherapy is Greek for “spa treatment,” tricks to pulling the “cancer card,” best pre-op lines for your doctor, tips for “trophy wife” reconstruction, and more.
