Tonya Mallory Steps Down As HDL, Inc. President And CEO; Is Succeeded By Dr. Joe McConnell

RICHMOND, VA (SEPTEMBER 23, 2014) – Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Inc. (HDL, Inc.) President and CEO Tonya Mallory announced today that she is stepping down from those positions effective immediately. Dr. Joe McConnell, a co-founder of the company and currently its Chief Laboratory Officer, succeeds her in both roles.

Mallory will continue to serve HDL, Inc. as a member of its Board of Directors and as an advisor to McConnell. Mallory, who is leaving for personal family reasons, said of McConnell: “I am confident that HDL, Inc. remains in good hands. Joe’s highly distinguished scientific career, including more than a decade of work at the Mayo Clinic and his in-depth knowledge as an HDL, Inc. co-founder, leaves him well positioned to lead this company.”

“It has been an honor to work with Tonya Mallory,” said McConnell. “She has been a vibrant and visionary leader who has dedicated herself to the well-being of both the patients we serve and those of us in the company. We are very pleased that she will continue her relationship with the company via both her board membership and as a valued advisor."

“I look forward to leading HDL, Inc. as it continues its critically important advanced testing that provides actionable information that can lead to early detection of diseases or pre-disease states, improved treatment, and even disease reversal,” said McConnell. “It is an honor to work with the fine men and women of HDL, Inc., and I look forward to our continuing mission of offering physicians these valuable testing tools and providing state-of-the-art disease prevention information for millions of patients.”

In a letter to employees, Mallory wrote, “Many of you know that my brother lost his wife a little over two years ago. He has recently started a new business close to home to avoid what was a two-hour round trip commute each day. The new venture will permit him to keep his young kids in their supportive community. I am leaving HDL, Inc. to help him get his new company off the ground in an effort that we hope will give his family financial security in addition to allowing him more time with his children.”

She also told employees, “Like you, I am very proud of the work we have done together to help people – revolutionizing patient care by changing the way that cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and related conditions are diagnosed and treated.”

Prior to joining HDL, Inc. in 2009, Dr. McConnell was associated with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for more than a decade. He served as its Director of Cardiovascular Laboratory Medicine and Chair of the Clinical Chemistry Fellowship Program. He concentrated on transforming the Clinic’s lipids and lipoproteins laboratory into a comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment laboratory. Dr. McConnell earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Chemistry from Cleveland State University, in partnership with the well-known Cleveland Clinic, and served his post-doctoral fellowship in clinical chemistry at the Mayo Clinic. He has authored more than 160 leading publications in peer-reviewed scientific literature.
