Hansen Medical Announces Launch of New Product Enhancement to Sensei(R) X Robotic Catheter System

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - September 22, 2010) - Hansen Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ: HNSN), the global leader in flexible robotics and the developer of robotic technology for accurate 3D control of catheter movement, today announced the launch of a new product enhancement to improve the clinical efficiency and ease of use of the Company's innovative Sensei® X Robotic Catheter System, a flexible robotic platform used by physicians during interventional cardiac arrhythmia procedures.

The new product has three main components:

  • Expands compatibility of Hansen Medical's CoHesion™ 3D Visualization Module with St. Jude Medical's next-generation EnSite Velocity™ Cardiac Mapping System. The CoHesion 3D Visualization Module provides physicians the ability in 3D to visualize, locate and robotically control catheters within the heart to diagnose heart rhythm disorders.
  • Introduces a new feature of the IntelliSense® Fine Force Technology® Interface called IS Flex. IS Flex is a tactile feedback mechanism the user experiences when actively using the instinctive motion controller (IMC) on the Sensei X system. As the IntelliSense forces rise, the motion scale ratio is adjusted so the IMC motion results in a smaller catheter tip motion. IS Flex is currently available in the European Union (EU) and is under review by the US FDA and not available in the United States.
  • Adds 3D Instinctive View, which provides Sensei X users with a feature that allows for 1-touch synchronization of the Sensei X view to that of a 3D anatomical map.

Hansen President and CEO Bruce Barclay noted that the new product enhancement consists of a software update to be performed on all installed Sensei X systems to ensure the flexible robotic platform provides the best in patient care.

"This system update underscores our commitment to continually enhance our technology and improve the experience for physicians using our products," said Barclay. "This update will improve workflow and, with the CoHesion update, allow an even broader group of clinicians to experience the efficiency and value flexible robotics provides to patient care."

About the Sensei® X Robotic Catheter System
The Sensei X system is the next generation flexible robotic platform that integrates advanced levels of 3D catheter control with 3D visualization, providing enhanced accuracy and stability to physicians during complex cardiac arrhythmia procedures. The Sensei X platform supports the newest generation of robotically steerable catheters including the Artisan™ Control Catheter and Lynx™ Robotic Ablation Catheter. The Artisan and Lynx catheters provide six degrees of articulation and variable bend radius which facilitates catheter placement in difficult to reach anatomical locations within the heart. The Artisan offers an eight French thru-lumen that accommodates pre-approved mapping catheters during EP procedures. The Lynx Robotic Ablation Catheter, which is only available in the EU, leverages the navigation capability of the Artisan catheter, but in a smaller and more flexible integrated profile for the treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and other electrophysiology disorders.

About Hansen Medical, Inc.
Hansen Medical, Inc., based in Mountain View, California, develops products and technology using robotics for the accurate positioning, manipulation and control of catheters and catheter-based technologies. The company's Sensei® system and its Sensei X Robotic Catheter System were cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for manipulation and control of certain mapping catheters in electrophysiology (EP) procedures. The flexible robotic platform is compatible with fluoroscopy, ultrasound, 3D surface map and patient electrocardiogram data. The safety and effectiveness of the Sensei and Sensei X systems for use with cardiac ablation catheters in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation (AF), have not been established. In the European Union, the Sensei and the Sensei X systems are cleared for use during EP procedures, such as guiding catheters in the treatment of AF.
