H.D. Smith Co. has laid off 80 employees nationwide, including 30 at the Springfield headquarters of the wholesale pharmaceutical company. Chairman and CEO Dale Smith Jr. said Thursday that changes in technology were behind the layoffs. Most were effective immediately. “It’s very difficult for us,” Smith said. “We are very much a family company, and the people who work here are family.”
