Last September, Google revealed Calico, a new company that focuses on health and the aging process. Now Calico officially has a website to provide more insight into what Google has in store for the healthcare industry.

Although the website is just now receiving attention, the San Francisco Chronicle reports that it may have launched a few weeks ago. The homepage describes Calico as “a research and development company whose mission is to harness advanced technologies to increase our understanding of the biology that controls lifespan.”

The Calico site goes onto say that the company is dedicated to using its knowledge to help people live longer, healthier lives. It also notes that although its mission requires long-term focus, it has the funding in place to move forward with its efforts.

“As we explained in our first letter to shareholders, there’s tremendous potential for technology more generally to improve people’s lives,” said Google co-founder Larry Page, following the reveal of Calico last September. “So don’t be surprised if we invest in projects that seem strange or speculative compared with our existing Internet businesses. And please remember that new investments like this are very small by comparison to our core business.”

When Calico was launched, there were little details accompanying the announcement. Page specified that Art Levinson, the former CEO of Genentech and Chairman of Apple, would be the CEO of Calico. He went onto discuss Calico’s mission to make a mark in the healthcare industry with its anti-aging efforts. However, there wasn’t much information revealed beyond these points.

Now Calico’s website has the potential to shed light on how the company is progressing, one year after its reveal.

When Web surfers visit the site, Calico displays a background of a tree ring – symbolic of age. As visitors scroll down the homepage, there are photos of the team members behind Calico. Clicking on one of these photos brings up a biography of the individual.

Calico includes sections at the bottom of the page for potential career openings and news releases. As these sections fill out, more information on Calico will inevitably become available.

“Art and I are excited about tackling aging and illness,” Page continued. “These issues affect us all -- from the decreased mobility and mental agility that comes with age, to life-threatening diseases that exact a terrible physical and emotional toll on individuals and families.”
