Georgia Health Centers Sign Statewide Contract For Companion Technologies EMR

10/19/2005 5:11:41 PM

COLUMBIA, S.C., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Georgia Healthcare Systems Inc. (GHS) signed a contract with Companion Technologies to implement its Companion EMR electronic medical records software at 14 health centers statewide.

GHS is an organization of federally qualified health centers (FQHC) with 78 sites throughout the state. They provide health care to the medically underserved population and recorded nearly 560,000 patient visits in 2002.

Some 250 staff will use Companion EMR as a network using a central server so they can share clinical data for grant purposes. The goals of the project are to decrease costs, increase revenue and improve patient care. GHS already had been using Companion Technologies' Companion PM practice management system for five years.

Companion Technologies won the $1.47 million contract, which covers software and related services, on a competitive bid against eight other vendors. The selection team included the top administrative officers and medical directors from each of the health centers.

"We chose Companion EMR because it meshes with our practice management system in a matter of seconds and it interfaces with lab systems. Plus, all EMRs can't code but this one can," said Jennie Wren Denmark, chief executive officer of East Georgia Healthcare center, Reidsville, Ga., and president of Georgia Health Systems. "By using Companion EMR, we expect to have better coding, better billing, fewer errors, and cost savings through reallocation of personnel. We won't lose charts and we can easily move charts between sites."

"An EMR is a way to use technology to practice better medicine," said Carla Belcher, chief executive officer of Community Health Care Systems, Wrightsville, Ga., and treasurer of Georgia Healthcare Systems. "How quickly you use software depends on the learning curve you have. Companion EMR visually was intuitive and easy to use."

"Having an EMR also is a good recruiting tool for us," said Donna Newsome, executive director of TriCounty Health System Inc., Warrenton, Ga. "The last two physicians we hired came to us as residents and were used to an EMR. It was music to their ears that they wouldn't have to handwrite their patient records."

Companion Technologies ( http://www.companiontechnologies.com/ ), based in Columbia, S.C., provides physician organizations with financial, clinical, operational and managed care information management services, from practice management systems, electronic medical records and electronic data interchange, to hardware and network services.
