GenoSpace Now Offers Aspera Corporation on Demand High-Speed Transfer to the Cloud

BOSTON—BioIT World 2013, Booth 234, April 10, 2013 —Aspera, Inc., creators of next-generation software technologies that move the world’s large data at maximum speed, and GenoSpace, a pioneer in cloud-based information systems for the exploration and advancement of personalized medicine have announced the immediate availability of GenoSpace for Clinical Care™ powered by Aspera high-speed transfer technology. The combined solution leverages Aspera’s patented faspTM software for high-speed transfer of massive amounts of genome sequence data sets to the GenoSpace cloud platform for analysis, storage and making it available to individuals and groups who need to connect with each other.

Recognizing that the rapidly falling cost of genome sequencing would make existing systems obsolete, GenoSpace developed a cloud-based data storage and “software-as-a-service” platform based on a robust, scalable, and secure data model. A key element of the GenoSpace system is its collection of intuitive, informative, data-access portals that can address the needs of a broad range of users.

While the GenoSpace platform was built from the ground up to be infinitely scalable, the team faced the challenge of how to get large genome sequences quickly and reliably moved from the physicians, clinical labs and researchers conducting clinical studies to their cloud platform where they would be stored and analyzed, while also maintaining a high degree of security.

GenoSpace selected Aspera On Demand for Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the Aspera Embedded Client, easily integrating the solution with their own software running on AWS. To deliver content to the GenoSpace platform, the clinical provider simply logs into the GenoSpace portal, opens an order request, encrypts the data, and then connects to the Aspera On Demand server to complete the high-speed transfer. Once the data is uploaded to AWS, administrators at GenoSpace pull files from the Aspera server using the Aspera Embedded Client, decrypt the contents, and place the files into their secure database for analysis.

“Aspera has achieved everything we hoped it would,” said Niall O’Connor, GenoSpace director of engineering. “The high-speed platform can scale to accommodate large and rapidly growing genomic data sets while also maintaining security and remaining cost effective for smaller data sets.”

“We are pleased GenoSpace has integrated Aspera On Demand with their innovative cloud-based platform,” said Richard Heitmann, Aspera vice president of marketing. “Aspera takes care of moving the research data into their system, at high-speed, securely and reliably, so they can focus on their core competency of data analysis and correlation.”
