Genomics Ltd Receives £2M ($3M) Award To Develop Its Genome Analysis Platform

Yesterday, Genomics Limited (“Genomics”), the Oxford based genome analytics company, was announced as a winner of £2m ($3M) in the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition “Enabling Technologies for Genomics Sequence Data Analysis and Interpretation”. The competition is run by Genomics England, the company undertaking the 100,000 Genomes Project in the UK National Health Service. This represents the third, and largest, award to Genomics under this scheme and it is the only company to have received three such awards.

The SBRI competition seeks development of technological innovations that will enhance genomic sequence data analysis capabilities. It is intended to support the development of new commercial products to develop the diagnostic potential of genomic screening and the wider use of stratified medicine in the UK and in world healthcare.

Genomics, a spin-out from the University of Oxford, was founded by Professors Peter Donnelly and Gil McVean. It has developed a unique analytical platform for genomic sequence data analysis and interpretation, and combines this with world-leading expertise in the analysis and data mining of large genomic databases.

“We are delighted to be working with Genomics England through the SBRI,” said John Colenutt, Chief Executive Officer of Genomics, “and by their endorsement of the potential of our genome analysis platform”.

“Genome sequence data can potentially transform healthcare, and the UK is playing a leading role in this process through the 100,000 Genomes Project,” added Professor Peter Donnelly. “Our aim is to use our expertise to develop best-in-class tools for clinical genome interpretation and variant calling, and this award will accelerate our product deployment.”
