FUJIFILM Medical Systems USA, Inc. Acquires Information Systems Vendor Empiric

STAMFORD, Conn., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- FUJIFILM Medical Systems USA is pleased to announce the acquisition of Empiric Systems, LLC, Morrisville, NC. Fujifilm has acquired 100 percent of the Empiric stock, making the vendor a wholly owned Fujifilm subsidiary. The acquisition is another significant step in Fujifilm's growth strategy, and a demonstration of the company's continued commitment to the fields of medical imaging and health information technology.

"Fujifilm is now in command of a fully integrated, Web-based solution for the entire radiology department," said Bob Cooke, Fujifilm's Vice President, Network Systems Management. "To meet the diagnostic workflow, efficiency and compliance challenges of today's radiology environment, healthcare facilities need a fully integrated solution. Fujifilm has already made substantial progress in integrating the Synapse and Empiric applications, and with the acquisition we are now in a position to deliver an even deeper integration that will yield the complete imaging informatics solution that healthcare facilities are seeking."

The burgeoning mutual install base is evidence of the successful, Fujifilm / Empiric collaboration of the past few years. In November 2007 the companies announced a formal reseller agreement under which Fujifilm would offer and support both its Synapse(R) PACS and the Empiric Encompass.NET RIS. Since then the two Web-based applications have been successfully combined and the integrated solution, complete with a single sign-on and single graphical user interface for the radiologist and clinician, has been deployed at numerous hospitals and imaging centers and health networks across the U.S.

"By solidifying our relationship with Fujifilm our customers gain access to a robust support and deployment infrastructure, while continuing to benefit from a nimble product development process and our commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology," said Mark Janas, Chief Technology Officer and Managing Partner, Empiric. "We are excited to expand our reach in the market and build upon the mutual sales success we've already enjoyed by leveraging Fujifilm's extensive sales and distribution resources. In particular, with the product already adapted to meet the needs of the international market, the acquisition allows us to look forward to growth as a result of Fujifilm's strong foothold in other regions of the world," continued Janas.

The Empiric acquisition follows Fujifilm's successful 2007 acquisition and swift integration of ProSolv CardioVascular into the Synapse portfolio. Fujifilm is the first major vendor to deliver seamless, Web-based access to all mammography and cardiovascular images and information, as well as to all RIS data and reports, from one workstation, with a single sign-on and familiar user interface.

"Fujifilm's product development direction continues to be towards delivering a complete imaging informatics solution for all diagnostic environments," stated Cooke. "As we look to the future, we plan to continually rely on the depth of resources and the vast infrastructure that's available as part of the Fujifilm organization. Our goal is to bring more information into the diagnostic process from other clinical areas, and to continue to successfully extend our solution while maintaining focus on our strength and foundation of imaging."

The terms of the acquisition are confidential.
