Frost & Sullivan Commends Brainreader For Developing A Solution That Automates The Entire Process Of Brain Disease Diagnosis

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent study of the brain volumetric image analysis market, Frost & Sullivan recognises Brainreader ApS with the 2016 European Frost & Sullivan Award for Enabling Technology Leadership. The Denmark-based Brainreader ApS has won this honour for developing a novel Software as a Service (SaaS) solution, the NEUROREADER that performs rapid assessment and measurement of brain volume changes. The tool is very effective in identifying early changes in brain volumes.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans from multiple persons can vary due to differences in slice orientation and brain features. Such images are normalised to a standard template image by a process known as spatial normalisation. After normalisation, the images are manually segmented by comparing an image to a template. Technology developers have now developed an automatic segmentation procedure that digitally compares at least two different images. Brainreader has improved upon this solution by introducing NEUROREADER, a software that can automate the entire process and provide accurate assessment of brain volume. This is necessary in the diagnosis of various cerebro-neural diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD).

"NEUROREADER is a fully automated volume measurement solution that employs a multi-atlas-based segmentation procedure to analyse different brain structures," said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Darshana  De. "This approach delivers optimal analysis by identifying changes in brain volume associated with neurodegenerative diseases and traumatic brain injuries. Radiologists and researchers alike can use the software to detect abnormalities in the brain and study various brain conditions such as depression and concussion."

NEUROREADER can map MRI scans of patients' brains against a large Food & Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared database of brain MRIs of healthy individuals, in just a few minutes. NEUROREADER, at present, is the only software of its kind to have received a fully FDA 510(k) clearance, as well as a CE Class I medical device certification for using a normative database and statistical evaluation of the measured volumes.

"Apart from AD, NEUROREADER solution can be used to study neurological brain disorders such as mild traumatic brain injury, which causes volume changes in the brain," noted Darshana. "The solution can also be highly effective in distinguishing patients with psychiatric disorders with symptoms similar to AD from those suffering from AD itself."

Significantly, the NEUROREADER is easy to use and can integrate with almost all picture archiving and communication systems (PACS). It is a software-as-a-service product, which is sold either through a subscription or on a pay-per-use basis.

For NEUROREADER's long-term viability and impact on the brain volumetric image analysis market, Brainreader ApS richly deserves the 2016 European Frost & Sullivan Award for Enabling Technology Leadership.

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to a company that has developed a pioneering technology that not only enhances current products but also stokes the development of newer products and applications. The award recognises the high market acceptance potential of the recipient's technology.
