Hannover, Germany. Bio-economics deals with such major questions as how to secure food supplies to feed the world, solutions for meeting the energy needs of the future and how modern technology can facilitate the industrial use of biogenic raw materials. This explains the continuous growth of bio-economics and its increasing importance to the economy. By 2016 the German government will have invested 2.4 billion euros in connection with its National Research Strategy Bio-economics 2030, which is dedicated to exploring how to realize the potential of knowledge-based bio-economics. Bio-economics therefore forms the focus of the exhibition program at BIOTECHNICA 2013. If there is one place where the discussion will focus on bio-economics, then it is the Industrial Biotechnology Marketplace, which offers a two-day conference program on 8 and 9 October (Tuesday and Wednesday).
One highlight of this year’s BIOTECHNICA will undoubtedly be the meeting of market leaders, as well as representatives of industry organizations from across Europe, who will be discussing new technological developments, new business models and emerging markets. During the morning sessions the lectures will concentrate on modern industrial biotech processes ranging from the development of new product properties and innovative bio-catalytic processes and their realization on an industrial scale through to the management of integrated materials flow in complex bio-refineries. Experts from business and diverse areas of applied science will deliver twenty-minute talks on current developments and challenges.
One prominent event within the conference is the competition to determine the most promising upcoming business model for the bio-economy. On each day this new initiative will offer six young European industrial biotech companies an opportunity to present their business concepts to a jury of three experts in brief elevator pitches. The winner among the six companies that staged a presentation on each of the respective days will receive a prize.
Each day of the conference will conclude with a discussion at which high-calibre representatives of European companies and organizations will actively participate. The conference, which takes place in English, will address such issues as “Unusual alliances and new business models – is the chemical industry ready for change?” (on Tuesday) and “What’s the economy in bio-economy?” (on Wednesday).
The Industrial Biotechnology Marketplace is one of four marketplaces at BIOTECHNICA. Experts and decision-makers from bio-process technology, biocatalysis and enzyme development come here to meet manufacturers of bio-based materials and chemicals, development engineers from the fields of materials development and the chemical industry, experts developing innovative bio-refinery concepts and R&D specialists in the chemical and food industries, cosmetics, paper, textiles and the polymer industry, as well as plant engineers specializing in fermentation plant and bio-refineries. The other marketplaces at BIOTECHNICA are dedicated to Personalized Medicine Technologies, Innovation in Food and BioServices.
