Five ARUP Laboratories' Physicians Selected for Best Doctors in America®

SALT LAKE CITY, May 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- ARUP Laboratories proudly announces that five ARUP pathologists have been selected for inclusion on the Best Doctors in America® list, Salt Lake City Metro Area. In the specialty of pathologist, ARUP was recognized in eight out of eleven subspecialties.

Michael B. Cohen, MD, was recognized in three subspecialties: cytopathology, general pathology, and genitourinary pathology. Cohen is a medical director in the Anatomic Pathology and Oncology Division at ARUP and a professor and vice chair for faculty and house staff development at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Cohen has been included in Castle Connolly America's Top Doctors since 2007 and America's Top Doctors for Cancer since 2005; Consumers' Research Council of America Guide to America's Top Pathologists since 2007; and Best Doctors in America list since 2005.

Mary P. Bronner, MD, was recognized in two areas of excellence: gastro pathology and general pathology.

Bronner serves as ARUP's director of the Anatomic Pathology and Oncology Division and is a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Bronner's honors include her election as president of the GI Pathology Society, election as council member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and, in 2005, the award of the Arthur Purdy Stout Prize, recognizing her work as a surgical pathologist under the age of 45 whose research publications have had a major impact on diagnostic pathology.

Sherrie Perkins, MD, who was recognized in hemapathology, is ARUP's chief medical officer (CMO) and director of laboratories as well as a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She completed a hematopathology fellowship under Dr. Carl Kjeldsberg at the University of Utah.

Wade Samowitz, MD, was recognized in liver pathology. Samowitz is staff pathologist for the Anatomic Pathology Division at ARUP and a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Specializing in gastrointestinal pathology and the molecular genetics of colorectal cancer, Dr. Samowitz is the medical director for numerous molecular tests in gastrointestinal cancer and other tumors, including microsatellite instability by IHC and PCR, mutational testing for BRAF, PIK3CA, and NRAS, evaluation for molar pregnancy, and specimen identification.

Lester J. Layfield, MD, recognized in surgical pathology, is vice president of the Anatomic Pathology Division and the medical director of the Histology Laboratory as well as co-medical director of solid tumor diagnostics at ARUP. Dr. Layfield is also the head of the Division of Anatomic Pathology and a professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is the primary author of Cytopathology of the Head and Neck and Cytopathology of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor.
