FDA Strengthens Warning On Tool For Fibroid Surgeries

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday strengthened its warning about the cancer-spreading risk for laparoscopic power morcellators, saying the medical devices shouldn’t be used for the majority of women undergoing surgery for a common uterine growth.

A dangerous form of cancer called sarcomas can masquerade as these growths, known as fibroids. Morcellators, which typically use a fast-spinning blade to cut up tissue for removal through tiny incisions, can worsen these cancers, the FDA said.
