Last month, the FDA took a much-anticipated step by issuing guidelines for drug makers that want to use social media, including examples of how to run paid search links on Google. Around the same time, the agency chastised one drug maker, Gilead Sciences, for a paid search link and the infraction offers an example of what the FDA does not want the pharmaceutical industry doing on social media.

In a June 27 letter to Gilead, the FDA Office of Prescription Drug Promotion cites a link for the Viread treatment for hepatitis B. The agency notes that the link is titled ‘Hepatitis B Prevention,’ suggesting the medicine is safe and effective for preventing the illness, but this information is actually not contained in the product labeling approved by the FDA. As a result, the agency says the drug is misbranded.
