Epilepsy Foundation Release: Conference Highlights Sudden Unexpected Death In Epilepsy (SUDEP)

SEATTLE, Oct. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dr. Jeffrey Bucchalter, Director of the Comprehensive Children's Epilepsy Center at Alberta Children's Hospital. Dr. Bucchalter will speak on Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) A Conversation Based on Risk and Empathy. SUDEP is the leading cause of premature death among people with epilepsy, and an epilepsy topic gaining more attention in research and patient-provider relationships.

Each year, more than 1 out of 1,000 people with epilepsy die from SUDEP. If seizures are uncontrolled the risk of SUDEP increases to more than 1 out of 150. To bring attention to the need for education and awareness about SUDEP, the national Epilepsy Foundation has partnered with leading medical professionals and other agencies to establish the SUDEP Institute promoting research and public programs relating to SUDEP.

The feature presentation on SUDEP is part of the November Epilepsy Awareness Month Conference being held in Seattle on Saturday, November 8 at the Wright Auditorium of Seattle Children's Hospital from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Other conference topics include Medical Marijuana: Current Impacts on Epilepsy Treatment, Sleep and Impacts on Epilepsy, Anti-Seizure Medication, and Infants/Preschool Age Children with Epilepsy.

A similar conference will be held in Spokane, WA on Saturday, November 15 at the Health Education Center of Providence Holy Family Hospital from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.David Lord, Public Policy Director, Disability Rights of Washington, will present on "Your Rights and Responsibilities." Other conference presentation topics include Medical Marijuana: Current Impacts on Epilepsy Treatment, Advancements in Treatments for Epilepsy, and a panel of parents speaking on Caregiving and Epilepsy.
