Dubai, UAE, 17 December 2015: The Emirates Gastroenterology & Hepatology Society (EGHS) and Vifor Pharma have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to lead the fight against iron deficiency (ID) in the UAE.

The two organisations are undertaking a series of initiatives aimed at encouraging people to undergo tests for iron deficiency and improving awareness of the symptoms and consequences of the disease if left untreated. The signing ceremony took place during a press conference held today (Tuesday 15 December 2015) in Dubai.

Iron is essential for the body2,3,4. It is needed for mental and physical health and to maintain energy levels. Iron is present in a substance called haemoglobin (Hb), which is found in red blood cells1. Haemoglobin carries oxygen in the blood from the lungs to the rest of the body, notably to the brain and the muscles, neither of which can function properly without enough oxygen. Iron is also needed to maintain a healthy immune system to help fight off infections3. Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia are serious comorbidities that commonly arise in several clinical situations. These include chronic kidney disease, chronic heart failure, chemotherapy-induced anaemia, inflammatory bowel disease, heavy menstrual bleeding, and postpartum bleeding. The treatment of iron deficiency is also an important consideration in surgery and patient blood management5.

As part of the MoU, the Gulf Alliance Iron deficiency Project (GAAP) has been launched to educate the public on the incidence and consequences of disease on their health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency worldwide. It is estimated that up to 5 billion people may suffer from iron deficiency, including around 111 million people in highly developed countries. But it often remains undiagnosed with numerous patients suffering unnecessarily. GAAP will formalize these parties’ intent to cooperate on projects relating to the treatment and management of Iron Deficiency.

"In addition, a varying amount of iron is stored in proteins that release it to the blood when needed. The more iron is absorbed from the diet, the higher the level of stored iron. Iron deficiency symptoms include fatigue and weakness, poor work performance, increased risk of infections, difficulty keeping warm, rapid heartbeat, and shortness of breath while exercising," said Dr. Maryam Al Khatry, President, Emirates Gastroenterology Society, Emirates Medical Association.

"Our aim is to collaborate with Vifor Pharma to educate the public and help them detect symptoms of iron deficiency. A simple test can make a big difference to a patient’s quality of life, while greater awareness of iron deficiency and efficient replacement of iron can result in improved health and a more productive life,” she explained, “we will support our partners in developing educational materials, relevant public awareness campaigns, and encouraging early blood testing.”

"Red meat, plant foods such as cereals, legumes and nuts are the best sources of iron. Untreated iron deficiency can lead to iron deficiency anemia, a condition characterised by inadequate red blood cells (erythrocytes) or hemoglobin. Most cases of iron deficiency anemia are mild, but if not treated can cause problems like irregular heartbeat, complications during pregnancy, and delayed growth in infants and children. A complete blood count can reveal a lot of information that can prevent Iron deficiency. We hope that the GAAP will help increase awareness among the public that early detection and treatment can be a game changer in the iron deficiency rates in the country", added Dr. Khatry.

Myriam Hakim, Vifor Pharma, GM GCC countries said “ Our presence in UAE is part of our strong commitment to the iron deficiency patients in the region where we are joining efforts with Emirates Gastroenterology & Hepatology Society (EGHS) to further increase awareness on ID and educate people to improve treatment and management of the disease.”
