STOCKHOLM, June 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Elekta has selected Birst, the global leader in cloud-based business intelligence (BI), to help clinicians, researchers and business managers exploit the potential of big data in their decision making.

Elekta's health care analytics will bring together clinical, financial, administrative and operational data from Elekta's and other systems across the cancer care continuum to drive personalized care. By delivering a comprehensive solution that handles everything from data extraction to rich visualization capabilities, Elekta will give users access to real-time clinical and business dashboards, standardized and ad hoc reports, and customized views. This enables them quick and easy access to information with the objective to drive better patient outcomes.

Elekta presented an initial result of this partnership with its Leksell Gamma Knife® Registry at the International Leksell Gamma Knife Society Meeting in May. The Registry, based on Elekta's new technology platform, is focused on improving quality reporting and measurement for indications treated with Leksell Gamma Knife and on establishing global benchmarks for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). This Registry provides a standard data management application, but also collects data in a HIPAA-compliant cloud-based data warehouse to provide integrated insight into the effectiveness of specific treatments, cost variations, and improving disease outcomes. Developed for the cloud, the Registry also will provide a platform for advancing collaboration in clinical research.

"Elekta users can now efficiently analyze their data to help them make better informed clinical decisions for their patients' care and business decisions to drive quality and efficiency in their practices. Better access to information will ultimately transform cancer care," says Todd Powell, Executive Vice President, Elekta Software.

"Being one of the largest oncology providers, we have been working with Elekta to connect our various multidisciplinary facilities. We needed to partner with someone that would not only enable us to drive efficiencies throughout our network, but also leverage health care analytics to help drive quality care initiatives and provide the best care possible for our patients," says Justin Klamerus, MD, Chief Quality Officer at McLaren Health Care.

"We're proud that Elekta has chosen Birst's end-to-end analytics solution to help Elekta drive health care innovations that improve patients' lives," said Birst Co-Founder and Chief Customer Officer Paul Staelin. "More and more organizations across the globe are using business intelligence to unlock the true value of their data. Health care companies such as Elekta are improving patient care by empowering doctors to analyze patient data in richer and more interactive ways than ever before using Birst."
