HICKSVILLE, N.Y., Aug. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- In March 2013, Dr. Richard Obedian made the cold journey from New York to Chicago for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual conference. He has never missed a conference but was really not looking forward to this particular trip. The weather was bad, he had a tough flight, and he was leaving behind a lot of unfinished work that was on his mind.

"I knew that I had to go to the conference. It was never an option to miss it, but I had so much on my mind when I was boarding that airplane," said Dr. Richard Obedian. This is actually one of the top complaints that conference organizers heard from participants. Many doctors and surgeons were hesitant to leave their busy practices even though they realized the value of the information given at the conference. Many of them were also not thrilled about heading to Chicago in March, either.

"It was cold in New York and here I am packing even more sweaters for freezing cold Chicago!" recalls Dr. Richard Obedian. As usual though, the conference proved its importance to Dr. Richard Obedian, as well as the thousands of other busy attendees. At the opening symposium, some of the most important published research was presented. Ironically, Dr. Richard Obedian had reviewed one of the papers presented. He felt quite proud as he had thought this paper showed important findings that needed to be shared within his medical community.

Dr. Richard Obedian needed to stay through until the end of the week to attend what he thought was the most important session the conference had to offer. He signed up for the "How to Build a Safe and Quality Orthopaedic OR Team in 2013: A Tool Kit to Improve Surgical Outcomes for Your Patients" Instructional Course. The course description said that participants should be ready to really pick apart their practice and be honest about their safety and quality issues. Dr. Richard Obedian was ready to do just that and was pleasantly surprised at how up-to-date he was on many of the points.

"I think that the fact that I literally work in so many locations, I am constantly re-evaluating the way I do surgery. I think this is why I am so much more up-to-date than I thought because I am always taking a piece of what I see that is working from one location back to my own office. It was eye-opening, though, as it always is, to evaluate your procedures and policies regarding surgery," states Dr. Richard Obedian.

Dr. Richard Obedian is looking forward to the upcoming conference, which will be held in New Orleans. The warm weather will be a nice break from March weather in New York. He has been asked to present at this meeting, so he will have a bit of preparing to do before boarding that flight. He knows that as it gets closer, it will be a bit stressful, but Dr. Richard Obedian will appreciate what he gains after attending, as he does each year.

About:Dr. Richard Obedian found that his surgical practices are up-to-date, along with learning a lot of important new information at the conference.
