ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwire - November 28, 2012) -

Jeffrey Shuren, M.D., J.D., the Director of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will speak at the SEMDA 2013 Conference.

The seventh annual SEMDA Conference will be held on February 19-20, 2013, at the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center. Applications for presenting companies are currently being accepted, and sponsorships are available.

"The opportunity to hear Dr. Shuren speak, and to interact with him through Q&A, will be of deep interest to anyone in the medical device field," said Ashley Hancock, Executive Director of SEMDA. "This is the person who controls the regulatory affairs related to medical devices and health IT, and we are very pleased to have him participate in the SEMDA Conference."

Dr. Shuren became the director of the CDRH in January 2010 after serving as Acting Center Director. The center is responsible for assuring the safety, effectiveness, and quality of medical devices; assuring the safety of radiation-emitting products (such as cell phones and microwave ovens); and fostering device innovation.

He has held various policy and planning positions within FDA from 1998 to 2009, including acting deputy commissioner for policy, planning, and budget; associate commissioner for policy and planning; special counsel to the principal deputy commissioner; assistant commissioner for policy; and medical officer in the Office of Policy.

Dr. Shuren received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from Northwestern University under its Honors Program in Medical Education. He completed his medical internship at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, his neurology residency at Tufts New England Medical Center, and a fellowship in behavioral neurology and neuropsychology at the University of Florida. He received his J.D. from the University of Michigan.

The SEMDA Conference is specifically designed to meet the needs of the medical device industry and brings together professionals from throughout the Southeast. Other highlights will include:

  • Presentations from some of the region's top existing and emerging medical device companies
  • Workshops on a variety of topics including critical business issues
  • Numerous networking opportunities plus structured 1:1 partnering

Early bird registration is available until the end of December. To register or learn more about the conference, sponsorship opportunities and presenting company applications, visit www.semda.net or contact admin@semda.net.
