Dose Control LLC's Patented Tamper-Resistant Programmable Portable Pill Dispenser Awarded KSEF Phase 0 Grant
7/29/2009 2:26:54 PM
Kentucky-based startup firm Dose Control LLC announces award of Kentucky Science & Engineering Foundation phase 0 grant to utilize toward SBIR grant application. Dose Control LLC is the assignee of US patent 7,108,153 and information, including functionality demo video's, can be seen at www.dosecontrol-llc.com. The patent covers a unique intelligent pill/capsule/tablet dispenser.
It is robust and simplistic in design, to enable a low retail price point. Yet it is tamper-resistant, programmable, portable, refillable and is designed to dispense medication no faster than the prescribed and programmed rate. It is an alternative to “pop top, access all at once” pill containers for a portion of the millions of annual US narcotic painkiller prescriptions.
The primary purpose of the dispenser is to deter prescription drug abuse, which continue to reach alarming levels. However, various patient alerts (audio/visual/vibrating) could be incorporated into the device using the primary patent embodiments, to also increase medication adherence. We envision two distinct markets for the patented dispenser, be the intended patient targets prescription drug abuse deterrence or medication adherence, or an overlap of the two patient targets: Consumer direct purchase.
Consumers would receive their prescription pills from the pharmacy in standard “pop top, access all at once” container, then fill and refill the Dose Control dispenser’s cartridge cavities, push the countdown timer to prescribed dosage rate, and lock the device with self-lock feature, for use by their family, friends, or those they care for. Pharmacy-filled. Pharmacists would fill and refill the Dose Control dispenser’s cartridge with blister packs created at the manufacturer or pharmacy level, push the countdown timer to prescribed dosage rate, lock the device with self-lock feature, then provide to patient. Each device could be serial numbered and tracked by patient, and if patient could not provide their originally issued dispenser to pharmacist, refills could be ceased until patient consults with physician or pharmacist. Both embodiments summarized above are described in the patent.
Dose Control LLC is currently seeking strategic partners to accelerate the introduction of the patented dispenser into the market.
