Diagnostic Ultrasound Corporation, Maker Of The BladderScan(R), Partners With International Volunteers In Urology To Sponsor Traveling Resident Scholars

BOTHELL, Wash., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Diagnostic Ultrasound Corporation (DU) is pleased to announce an agreement with International Volunteers in Urology (IVU) to sponsor two traveling resident scholars during the 2006-2007 scholarship year. IVU's Traveling Resident program provides for residents to accompany a mentoring Urologist overseas, where the team teaches urological procedures to local surgeons and physicians. The value of the Diagnostic Ultrasound donation, in financial support and medical equipment, is over $30,000.

One of the DU-sponsored scholars will be chosen from the University of Washington Medical School and a second scholar will be chosen from the Pacific Northwest/Western region. IVU plans to announce the candidates selected in February 2006.

Diagnostic Ultrasound, in addition to the financial scholarships, will donate BladderScan(R) bladder volume instruments for the residents to gift to their destination hospitals. The BladderScan(R) is the standard of care in Urology for bladder volume measurement.

"I am extremely impressed by the fine work done through the IVU and University of Washington traveling resident programs," said Gerald McMorrow, CEO, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Diagnostic Ultrasound Corporation. "These programs not only provide much needed urological care for patients, but the residents and their mentors also train local doctors so they can provide quality care for their patients in the future. We are proud to be able to help them achieve this mission."

The University of Washington resident that Diagnostic Ultrasound is sponsoring will be working in Cameroon with Dr. George Brannen, a Professor of Urology at the University. Dr. Brannen's Cameroon program, initiated in 2004, covers three hospitals and 12 rural health centers.

"The new collaboration with Diagnostic Ultrasound advances the mission of our Global Initiative Program from several perspectives," said Dr. Brannen. "The donated supplies permit sharing of resources with those who suffer physical distress. The Urology residents are trained to practice 'Resource Limited Medicine,' and these young physician scholars are given a humanitarian venue that results in sustainable material developments and that spreads good will in the global community. The momentous effect of such opportunities will reach future generations."

The second scholarship will sponsor a Western or Pacific Northwest Urology resident identified through IVU's selection process.

"IVU relies entirely on private funding to support its programs," said Alyssa McBride, Executive Director of IVU. "Diagnostic Ultrasound's sponsorship of two Resident Scholarships not only enables two residents to have an amazing educational experience, but it also provides for the care of hundreds of patients that the residents and their mentors will attend to over the years. It is only through partnerships like this one with Diagnostic Ultrasound that IVU is able to fulfill its mission of providing quality urological care in the developing world."

While abroad, IVU residents have exposure to a wide variety of cases and may have the opportunity to participate in types of surgeries that are difficult for trainees to gain access to in the United States. Residents also learn resourcefulness, as conditions in their destination countries are often markedly different from those in the United States. IVU programs in 2005 sponsored teams to Cuba, Vietnam, Nicaragua, Mongolia, Honduras, Ghana, Peru, Cameroon, and India.

NOTE: If you are a Urology resident and are interested in applying for a Traveling Resident Scholarship, please visit the IVU Website www.ivumed.org and contact IVU directly for details on applications and due dates.
