Curelator Headache Announces Study With NYU Langone Medical Center To Examine Effectiveness Of Protective Behaviors For Migraineurs And Post-Concussive Headache Patients

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. and NEW YORK, Oct. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Alec Mian PhD, the CEO of Curelator Inc., announced today that NYU Langone Medical Center is initiating a clinical study using the Curelator Headache application to explore what happens to patients' headaches when patients with migraine and post-concussive headache do behavioral treatments. The principal investigator in the study is Dr. Mia Minen, MD MPH. Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology, Director of Headache Services, NYU Langone Medical Center.

The study will enroll 100 patients with migraine and 75 patients with post-concussion headaches. It is titled, "Protective Headache Factors for Migraineurs and Postconcussive Headache Patients: Are Behavioral Strategies Effective? A Naturalistic Study." The study's purpose is to determine if there are any protective behaviors that may decrease the frequency and/or intensity of headache attacks.

"Curelator was created to examine patients' migraine triggers. Patients input different variables (sleep, exercise, and more) to see if there could be individual triggers. We thought that it would be interesting to see if there could be certain variables, such as performing relaxation exercises, which would be protective against the development of headaches," commented Dr. Minen. Elizabeth K. Seng, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology is also involved in the study.

This is an IRB-approved clinical study for adults with migraine or post concussion headaches, which uses Curelator Headache, a digital application that collects information every day about things that may increase or decrease each individual's headaches and migraine attacks. The application is currently available on iPhone and iPad only. Participants are being asked to input data daily for 90 days, with an extension of an additional 90 days if they wish, to see if they can modify their behaviors to try and reduce their headache frequency or intensity. This study will include a specially designed set of relaxation exercises, accessible on an audio tape.

Each day, participants will be asked questions about the amount of time they were able to fully engage with the program, questions about psychologist consultations, and whether they performed the intervention or exercise that, when they first started the study, they said increased their relaxation.

"The ability of Curelator Headache to track, measure and analyze the complex interactions of things that people do in their everyday life is an important aspect of the platform." Said Alec Mian, Ph.D. CEO of Curelator Inc. "In this study, Dr. Minen will examine the potential for behavioral and relaxation protocols to offer a protective effect for migraineurs and people with post concussion headaches and expand our understanding and management of these conditions."
