EDISON, N.J., April 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ Parents seeking plagiocephaly treatment for their babies will have a new Cranial Technologies center to visit in Edison beginning April 7. This facility joins the Hackensack location to expand CranialTech's presence in New Jersey and is its 20th U.S. clinic.

Cranial Technologies: Reshaping Children's Lives

A recent study released in Pediatrics, the official journal of The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), found that 10 percent of babies seven to 12 weeks old showed signs of moderate to severe plagiocephaly (misshapen head).1 This finding is consistent with data published in earlier studies.

The increase in plagiocephaly is linked to the AAP's Back to Sleep SIDS-prevention campaign. Torticollis (tight neck muscles), restricted womb space (especially in multiple births), and the use of baby convenience carriers also are contributing factors.

Cranial Technologies provides plagiocephaly treatment for babies three to 18 months old using its FDA-cleared DOC Band®."Plagiocephaly is our sole focus," said Carol Erickson, president/CEO. "Our mission is to provide a family-friendly environment, and the best care and treatment outcomes at all of our locations. We are very excited about our new, state-of-the-art clinic here in Edison."

According to Lynne Ball, Cranial Technologies East Coast clinic manager, the DOC Band redirects growth to flattened areas of the head, resulting in a more even shape. Ball added that treatment helps address these health concerns that may persist later in life:

  • Flattening
  • Skull, ear and facial asymmetries
  • Functional implications of fitting eyeglasses, sports helmets and other headgear

Parents and pediatricians often discover plagiocephaly during wellness checks. Literature supports early intervention (between four to six months old) to achieve optimal treatment results from cranial banding therapy. Treatment at Cranial Technologies starts with a free evaluation that includes a 3D digital image analysis. Once babies receive their custom-fitted DOC Band, they return for regular fitting adjustments. Treatment times vary depending on severity and the baby's age.

Erickson added that all Cranial Technologies clinics are staffed by physical and occupational therapists, orthotists and registered nurses that specialize in plagiocephaly treatment. "We are growing and always looking for qualified clinicians to join our team. CranialTech offers a unique opportunity to help babies and their families, and we encourage anyone interested to visit our careers page online."
