Connecticut Nursing Program Graduates Record Number

7/6/2009 3:32:53 PM

RWJF -- Southern Connecticut State University's nursing program last year graduated a record 873 students, a number partially attributed to an 83 percent increase in enrollment since 2002, the New Haven Register reports. Moreover, 100 percent of the school's nursing graduates last year passed the state licensure examination on their first attempt. Despite such achievements, the university reports that it continues to turn away qualified applicants because of a shortage of nursing faculty. To address the issue, the school has in recent years expanded its program offerings. For example, the university five years ago launched an online course designed to appeal to a wider demographic of students. In addition, two years ago it introduced an Accelerated Career Entry program that allows students who have already obtained a bachelor's or master's degree in another field to complete a nursing curriculum in 12 months. The Register notes that nursing is now the top major at the university.
