CDC Reports Historic Low In U.S. Fertility Rates; New FDA Cleared & At-Home Alternative From Conceivex, Inc. Now Available To Help Millions Who Want To Start A Family

Common Over-The-Counter Medications Likely One Factor In Infertility Jump

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The results of the August 2016 report from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that found American fertility rates have fallen to an all-time low are driven by a number of factors – including the effect of more than a dozen over-the-counter medications.

“The Conception Kit is an important step toward answering a wide range of infertility questions for American couples”

According to the CDC, the number of babies born per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 are at the lowest levels since 1909. These findings, which are based on population data from the CDC that track birth and fertility statistics, reported that the fertility rate decreased from 60 births per 1,000 women in the first quarter of 2015 to 59.8 per 1,000 in the first quarter of 2016, meaning that fewer babies are being born to women of likely childbearing age in the U.S. The general fertility rate in the United States has fallen more than 10 percent since 2007.

“The CDC’s findings aren’t that surprising,” Michael La Vean, President and Founder of Conceivex, maker of The Conception Kit®, a new at-home, cost-effective infertility treatment option now available in the U.S., said. “While there are more than 20 million women who are affected by infertility today, we also know that male sperm counts have declined 58 percent since 1938. Clearly, millions of couples need some extra help to start their families – ideally assistance that is affordable, private, and doesn’t require extensive hormone and other invasive treatments.”

For men, a wide range of over-the-counter medications can dramatically decrease fertility. These include: anabolic steroids and corticosteroids, high blood pressure medications, diuretics, a number of common antacids, certain anti-inflammatory drugs, certain antipsychotics, methadone, anticonvulsants, along with chemotherapy and immunosuppressant medications. The Conception Kit is an FDA cleared, drug- and hormone-free infertility first step treatment that couples use in the privacy of their own home. It is available nationally for a $30-$75 co-pay with a prescription at more than 65,000 pharmacies in the U.S., including Walmart, Target, Rite Aid, and Walgreens. Additionally, about 60 percent of insured individuals in the U.S. already have reimbursable access to it through their pharma benefits managers Express Scripts, CVS/Caremark, and others.

The FDA required clinical trials on placement of The Conception Kit’s Conception Cap (a key part of the kit) and instructions by patients. During the trials, 24 percent of the patients got pregnant during the first 30 days. This group had failed with other methods used for conception such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI). Patients who can successfully conceive using The Conception Kit have a likelihood of having a single, healthy birth at full-term based on successful user accounts to date.

Many historic infertility treatment options can prove costly. For example, a single cycle of IVF costs $12,500 on average, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and is not always covered by insurance. And while advancements have been made in IVF treatment, patients who elect this route to address infertility still face risks, including multiple births as well as premature births that can land newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

“The Conception Kit is an important step toward answering a wide range of infertility questions for American couples,” La Vean added. “I encourage people who may be struggling to conceive to look into all possible options and discuss the best route to fulfill your family goals with your doctor.”
