Company Debuts New Software for Enhanced Detection of Chest Disease, Breast Cancer; New Healthcare IT Systems to Help Enable Faster Diagnosis, Treatment

CHICAGO, Nov. 20 — Carestream announced new X-ray imaging software that has been designed to minimize anatomical distractions to assist physicians in the diagnosis of chest pathology. The new software is FDA 510(k) pending in the United States.

“Ribs and other bony structures often impair viewing of organs and soft tissues in the chest. Our new software will generate a specially processed image from an original chest X-ray to allow better visibility of these areas without requiring a separate X-ray exam for the patient,” said Diana L. Nole, President, Digital Medical Solutions, Carestream. “This is more convenient and beneficial for patients, and will help reduce radiation dose by minimizing the need for additional X-ray exams.”

The new software will include a reporting capability that collects and distributes dose information from Carestream X-ray imaging systems to a healthcare provider’s radiology image management system. This new feature is intended to help healthcare facilities streamline the collection of radiation dose information for each patient.

Carestream also demonstrated innovative radiology technologies to help physicians deliver enhanced diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of diseases and conditions:

• New X-ray image reporting features that will equip referring physicians with access to current and prior imaging studies and radiology reports to help optimize treatment decisions was shown as a work in progress.
• New healthcare IT technology that will allow X-ray imaging studies to be quickly and securely sent digitally to off-site radiologists and specialists to help enable faster diagnosis and treatment—especially for after-hours exams—was shown as a work in progress.
• New tools for digital breast tomosynthesis designed to further enhance early detection and treatment of breast cancer were shown as a work in progress.
• Enhancements to Carestream’s radiology information system will include personal information for each patient, including family health history, and will provide patients with online access to their X-ray imaging studies and reports so they can manage and share information with other physicians if desired. These new capabilities are a work in progress.

Carestream is currently displaying its newest medical imaging and healthcare IT solutions at the annual Radiology Society of North America (RSNA) conference, which hosts the largest gathering of radiology professionals in the world.
