LAKE SUCCESS, NY (JULY 30, 2013) - CareMed Pharmaceutical Services has been selected to supply oncology drug Tarceva (Erlotinib). Genentech and Astellas Pharma US, the manufacturer of Tarceva, stopped distributing the medication through retail pharmacies on July 1. CareMed joins an elite network of specialty pharmacies authorized to dispense the limited distribution oncology medication.
Tarceva is a once daily oral non-chemotherapy cancer treatment. Tarceva is a targeted cancer treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for maintenance therapy and second- or third-line therapy for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Tarceva is prescribed for patients with advanced-stage, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose cancer has not spread or grown after initial treatment with certain types of chemotherapy. Tarceva is prescribed for patients with advanced-stage NSCLC whose cancer has spread or grown after receiving at least one chemotherapy regimen. Tarceva is not meant to be used at the same time as certain types of chemotherapy for advanced NSCLC. Tarceva gained FDA approval in May 2013 as a first-line treatment of NSCLC.
“CareMed is honored to be able to continue supplying our patients with Tarceva,” said John Witkowski, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for CareMed. “In 2013, The American Cancer Society estimates 228,000 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer, with NSCLC accounting for 85 percent of lung cancer cases. Of these, the majority of people diagnosed will already be in an advanced stage of the disease. ”
Tarceva is not a chemotherapy drug. Tarceva is a targeted cancer treatment which is a kind of therapy that affects certain signals needed for cancer cells to grow. It may also impact healthy cells. Tarceva may slow or block the activity of a specific protein called epidermal growth factor receptor 1 (HER1/EGFR). Cancer cells need this protein to grow and divide.
“CareMed is proud to continue to have access to Tarceva and to be one of a highly elite network of suppliers capable of supplying this oral oncology treatment to our patients,” Witkowski reports. “At CareMed, we work tirelessly to meet the needs 24/7 of the physicians and patients that count on us as their specialty pharmacy of choice and we do not take that responsibility lightly.”
