FRAMINGHAM, Mass., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Cambridge Endo, a Massachusetts-based medical device company, today announced the launch of the first fully articulating hand-held needle holder for laparoscopic surgeons: the Autonomy(TM) Laparo-Angle(TM) Needle Holder. The needle holder addresses intracorporeal suturing and knot tying, one of the most demanding challenges in laparoscopic surgery. This revolutionary instrument provides seven degrees of freedom and maps the motion of the hand holding the instrument. This freedom of movement delivers a new level of access, positioning, and control for needle management, suturing, and knot tying. The ergonomic handle enables comfortable single-handed use and helps relieve surgeon fatigue.
Along with the Autonomy(TM) Laparo-Angle(TM) Needle Holder, Cambridge Endo will offer a full line of 5 mm instruments including Metzenbaum Scissors, Maryland Dissector, and Electrosurgery Hook. Designed to be used with existing standard trocars, Autonomy allows the surgeon to use the instrument without changing the procedure. Their unique Angle Locking Mechanism allows surgeons to hold the angle of articulation when performing a task, while the Axial Rotation Knob allows rotation of the tip at that angle. This makes Autonomy(TM) Laparo-Angle(TM) Instruments ideal for needle driving, knot tying, dissecting, and cutting.
The founder of Cambridge Endo, Woojin Lee PhD, developed this advanced technology in collaboration with the surgical community. The Autonomy(TM) Laparo-Angle(TM) Needle Holder has been used in many diverse procedures. "The needle holder functioned exactly as designed," said Dr. Lee. He added "We've had an enthusiastic response from the surgical community."
