Hannover, Germany. BIOTECHNICA, Europe's No. 1 Event for Biotechnology, the Life Sciences and Lab Technology, will host the Life Science Spotlight forum for the fifth time this October in Hannover, Germany. The forum, which explores the latest advances in the life sciences, owes its success to the fact that the presenting experts focus solely on their research and scientific work – no marketing message attached. The Life Science Spotlight is organized by Life Science Research (LSR), a department of the Association of the German Diagnostics Industry (VDGH).

The Life Science Spotlight will address a different keynote theme on each day of BIOTECHNICA. The theme for day one of the fair, Tuesday, 8 October, is Personalized Medicine – in keeping with the fair’s lead theme. The session kicks off with a presentation by Dr. Lutz Garbes of Cologne University on next-generation sequencing (NGS) in diagnostics. Next up, Dr. Julia Beck of Chronix Biomedical (Germany) will take a look at the highly promising diagnostic possibilities opened by digital PCR with reference to graft-derived cell-free DNA as a biomarker for rejection. Dr. Lukas Heukamp of the Cologne University Institute of Pathology and Robert Löwe of GeneWake Pharmacogenomics (Germany) will then present a number of case studies from the field of oncology in their paper on NGS as a key to personalized medicine. The Tuesday session will close with a paper by Dr. Jürgen Zimmermann of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) on the key role of metagenomics in the advancement of personalized medicine.

The Wednesday session is broadly themed around biomarkers and will start with a presentation by Sören Schuhmacher of the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (Fraunhofer IBMT), Germany, on a “Credit Card-Sized System for the Routine Point-of-Care Use of Biomarkers.” Biomarkers are a field of research that promises to have a major impact on the future of patient care. Next on the program, Dr. Bent Brachvogel of the Cologne University Center for Molecular Medicine (ZMMK) will provide answers to the question, “Micro-RNA – What are they good for?” This will be followed by Ruth Kläver of the Münster University Center for Reproductive Medicine and Andrology (CeRA), who will give a presentation on “DNA Methylation in Spermatozoa as a Prospective Marker in Andrology.” The session will be rounded out by a presentation on the role of the quantitative techniques ICPL and SRM in modern protein analysis by Dr. Friedrich Lottspeich of the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry.

The third session, on Thursday 10 October, is dedicated to quality assurance in life science research. The day’s proceedings with open with Peter Boogaard of Vialis AG, who will profile a number of innovative laboratory management solutions that highlight the linkages between quality, research and efficiency. This will be followed by papers on the key role of life sciences in water quality analysis by Mats Leifels of Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) and Dr. Beatrix Kronemann of Wesseling GmbH, Germany.
