Biomedical Systems Sponsors Pulmonary Function Workshop in London, England

St. Louis, MO – December 1, 2010 – Biomedical Systems sponsored a one day interactive workshop titled, “Pulmonary Function Testing in Clinical Trials” at the May Fair Hotel in London, England on 17 November 2010. The discussions were moderated by Scott Burcham, RRT, Biomedical Systems’ Director of Pulmonary Function. Joining Mr. Burcham for the day was a distinguished panel of international pulmonary function experts:

- Jack Wanger, MSc, RRT, RPFT, FAARC, Senior Clinical Scientist with PRA International

- Professor Janet Stocks, PhD, Professor of Respiratory Physiology, University College London

- Dr. Martin Miller, Consultant Respiratory Physician, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Medical Centre, Birmingham

- Dr. Graham Clarke PhD, Associate Director, Clinical Physiology, Therapeutic Area Head - Respiratory Phase 1, Quintiles

The workshop featured an overview of data centralization of pulmonary function in clinical trials and delved into specific testing modalities. Mr. Wanger, a member of the ATS and European Respiratory Society (ERS) Task Force, which developed the 2005 guidelines on pulmonary function testing, gave an excellent presentation on “Obtaining Quality DLCO/TLCO and Lung Volume Data in Clinical Trials”. Professor Stocks followed on with “Considerations for Children in Pulmonary Function Testing”, which helped to clarify many of the issues faced by sponsors in pediatric respiratory trials.

The afternoon session featured a comprehensive talk by Dr. Martin Miller, “Spirometry Testing and Data Analysis in Clinical Trials” and closed with an interesting session “Challenge Models of Inflammation and Exhaled Nitric Oxide” by Dr. Graham Clarke. The workshop was well-attended with representatives from pharma, biotech and medical device in the audience.

Biomedical Systems has sponsored complimentary educational workshops for sponsors for the past several years. In addition to pulmonary function, Biomedical Systems invested in six other educational workshops on topics for Cardiac Safety and Imaging in North America, Europe and Asia.

“With the current down trend in the economy, we saw that companies just weren’t sending people to the more expensive, more commercial, seminars and trade shows put on by the show organizers,” said Kevin J. Klingler, President of Pharmaceutical Services for Biomedical Systems. “By making these events complimentary and local, sponsors can send their employees to learn from industry experts on a variety of topics without incurring any expense or have to deal with the time out of office that the other shows require. Biomedical Systems believes that investing in these workshops allow sponsors to develop better protocols and conduct better trials.” A full slate of workshops is proposed for North America, Europe, Japan and India in 2011.
