Rochester, NY – December 9, 2013 – Bio-Optronics announced today that it has selected Jeffrey Markin, formerly of VirtualScopics Inc. and Eastman Kodak, to fill the role of Vice President and Chief Operations Officer effective immediately.

In the search for an additional member of its executive team, Bio-Optronics was looking for a candidate with broad operational and product-line management experience within the healthcare industry who could help with the company’s accelerating growth, while continuing to strengthen Bio-Optronics’ competitive advantage.

“We had a very clear idea of the qualities we were looking for in a new member of our executive team,” said Dan Kerpelman, Bio-Optronics’ President and CEO. “Jeff’s years at VirtualScopics and Kodak have given him the unique skills and experiences we felt were necessary, and we felt Jeff’s values were a good fit with our company culture. We are excited to have Jeff at Bio-Optronics and look forward to his contribution to our ongoing success.”

Following a long tenure at Eastman Kodak, where Markin held positions in manufacturing, R&D, product-line management, regional general management and divisional general management, including leading Kodak’s healthcare information technology, he served as the CEO of the Rochester-based imaging CRO, VirtualScopics, for seven years, where he guided the company through many years of substantial growth.

In conjunction with Markin’s appointment to the Bio-Optronics executive team, existing company Vice President Maria Durkin is appointed to the role of Chief Business Officer.

“Maria has been a lynchpin to Bio-Optronics’ phenomenal growth over the last five years. She began managing services and marketing and was later assigned the additional responsibility of managing sales, a role in which she’s excelled.” said Dan Kerpelman. “This change will redistribute executive responsibility between Maria and Jeff in a way that will increase our focus on pre- and post-sale customer care while liberating much needed executive capacity for product-line management as our portfolio expands.”

Markin is the first addition to the Bio-Optronics executive team since 2008. Over the past five years, Bio-Optronics has tripled in size, expanding every department within the organization. The addition of Markin to the executive team and the redistribution of responsibility between Markin and Durkin add valuable experience and focus that will allow Bio-Optronics to sustain its foothold as a leader in providing software and services to healthcare organizations around the world.
