Baytown Bayer Facility Set for $120M Upgrade

5/4/2011 6:40:18 AM

Houston Business Journal -- Bayer MaterialScience LLC said Tuesday that it will invest about $120 million in improvements to its Baytown plastics and petrochemicals manufacturing plant in Chambers County, including environmental, process and safety upgrades.

The facility, now in its 40th year of operation, is one of the largest in the U.S. for Bayer MaterialScience, a division of German chemical and pharmaceutical giant Bayer AG. Among the operations slated for improvement are polycarbonates, used in nearly every consumer industry from automotive to audio to illumination, and diisocyanates, which are used to produce various foams used in both industry and consumer products.

“These comprehensive upgrades will support the growth we are anticipating in the NAFTA region,” Greg Babe, Bayer MaterialScience president and CEO, said in a statement.
